A short introduction

I’m Callum, a senior full-stack engineer who likes finding the clear path through complicated product and technical problems.

I've been making websites and web based solutions since the age of 15. I bring the expertise to bring projects from conception to delivery.

While I have excellent full stack experience, my recent specialisation is in backend and infrastructure ownership.

Outside software, you'll find me in the gym lifting weights, practicing Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), or taking photos.

What I gravitate towards

Infrastructure

Building cost effective cloud native applications on AWS. I've got experience defining infrastructure with Terraform, and CDK, using services such as ECS, S3, RDS, Lambda, API Gateway and CloudFront.

API Design

Long live REST! I love designing APIs, data modelling and transferring data over HTTP. If you get it, you get it!

Technical leadership

Understanding what's needed at a high level, direction setting for talented teams, being fully aware of my own knowledge limitations.

Devops Engineer

I've spent the last 2 years working on a lean DevOps team of three, building a brand new platform for eye doctors across the USA on top of AWS services.

Previously

Senior Engineer - eCommerce and Optical Technology

Designed and built a service-oriented ecommerce platform for a contact lens retailer operating across the UK, EU and USA.

Working principles

Simplicity is king

Prefer the least amount of moving parts possible, with considerations of possible directions the project may take in the future.

Within reasonable time

Development teams shouldn't slow down the business, but also shouldn't cut corners on QA.

Coding as an art

For me there is a conceptual beauty behind code which has been written by a master of the craft. A science but also an art. There is a creative and personal touch in all code written. I seek to always improve my craft and achieve mastery myself.
